What is a Trigger?
The Strike Finder is a device that will activate your camera’s shutter. The Strike Finder 2 will “trigger” your camera whenever there is a lightning bolt, allowing you to easily capture lightning photos automatically.
How Does the Strike Finder Work?
The sensor on the Strike Finder detects infrared light emitted by the lightning strike and will “trigger” your camera’s shutter to take a photo. The Strike Finder 2 is constantly adjusting it’s internal sensitivity to allow for ambient light.
Do I need one?
Yes and no. You can capture lightning photos at night using the long exposure method. However, the Strike Finder will save you countless shutter clicks while still allowing you to take long exposures. Daytime lightning photography is much harder, almost impossible, without a trigger.
What settings should I use?
You want your camera to respond quickly so put your lens into manual focus, take off anything that will slow your camera such as live view, auto stabilization, noise reduction, etc. Night shooting: 1/8″ or longer, f/8, ISO 100 adjust as needed. Daytime shooting: 1/40 – 1/4″, f/11, ISO 100, adjust as needed.
